Your Heart or Your Hair: Which do you Choose?

I went yesterday to go get my hair cut and spent most of the day debating how to get it done. Should I let it grow? Or, cut it short? How about bangs? Layers? Several questions swirled in my mind. I ended up getting about an inch trimmed off and a few layers.

It’s amazing what a good trim can do!

There were several deciding factors and I’m not ashamed to say one of them took into consideration my workouts, BUT ... my ‘do has to adapt to my sweat schedule – period.

I’m not sure what it is about women and our hair, but let’s just say for many of us it’s a HUGE deal. Keeping your hair healthy and stylish when running and working out can be a pain in the ass challenging. Short, long, kinky, curly, processed, colored, frizzy, straight, thick, thin – there are so many types of hair for so many types of women and each of them can present a struggle when it comes time to get your sweat on.

Yes, there are times when I take my hair into consideration when planning my days, but I don’t let it stop me. I choose my heart over my hair everyday without question. I could lose all my hair and be a happy, healthy, beautiful woman, but without my heart I have nothing.

How about you? Do you choose your heart or your hair? I personally am in favor of keeping both of them fabulous, ahem, and would love to know how YOU do it.

Winks & Smiles,

I try to have a hairstyle that works for exercise - i.e. long enough to pull into a pony tail, but I sweat so much that it's a lost cause when it comes to after the workout...either a cap gets jammed on my head, or I head to the showers. Your hair looks great!

The cut and style look great!

To be honest, I don't bother much with my hair... I try to make myself look presentable most days and I do enjoy dressing it up for special occasions, but usually it's just... there. And sweaty!

Since I've recently started jogging/running, I haven't really thought about what I'm going to do with my waist length mane. Throughout the week, I may wash my hair with conditioner and bun it or save the shampoo/conditioner wash routine for the weekend when I wear my hair down. But I definitely put my heart over my hair. No question about it.

Great cut!
I keep mine long, no bangs. Easy and fast out the door! And the few times I do go "out", I curl it up and let it hang long to look "glamorous" as my mom says. :)

I have to admit, now that I go to an all women's gym I'm not as fanatic about my hair during my workout BUT afterward it's a big deal.

Yes I travel to and from the gym with a big ole bookbag full of stuff I will need after my workout.

Yes my back will hurt.

Yes I'm much happier using each and every product! lol

Your cut looks great! I've started keeping my hair slightly longer thhan shoulder length just because that is the easiest to keep in a ponytail while working out. All practicality, no fashion :)

I keep mine long enough for a ponytail. I've tried short before and it was annoying to keep out of my face when working out, plus it took me so much longer to get ready in the morning!

I have locs so thankfully, my transition into a runner has really had no affect on my hair. But I know that does slow some women down. I love your sentiment of loving your heart more though!

I choose my heart, of course. Especially since I just hacked off over 8 inches. ACK! Running with super short hair is totally weird.

Thank you so much for this post. It brought tears to my eyes. If I'm nothing else, I am a fanatic about my hair...much to my detriment. Trying to be cute and maintain my coif, I have gained nearly 100 pounds over the past 15 years. Now that I have decided that enough is enough, my hair looks worse than it ever has as an adult. I've toyed with shaving down to a boy cut to getting braids (probably won't do this one) or sporting a ball cap when I do not have meetings. I have been a hostage to my "Halle Berry" 'do for too long and I will not allow it to limit my physical activity again. I want to enjoy a very long life with my family and friends. Mr TBS queried best: "Do you want the inconvenience of a hairdo that may not be the most fly because of sweat or do you want to be in a premature casket?" Ummm...I'll take the former, thank you.

I was crying too! Thank you so much for posting and being honest. I've been battling the "hair" thing myself. Keep being an inspiration!

I too chose my heart and chose it 4 years and over 40 lbs ago. I haven't regretted it at all! Hair can be fixed (or weaved or braided, or cut, colored--yet get it) and I do like it fixed and fly! But I LOVE the way I feel when I am in good shape and can strut in a cute tennis skirt or nice outfit and heels! BIG SMILE!

Shoot, I got so caught up in me that I forget to tell you--GREAT Cut. You're working it!

Cute hair cut, love the layers! One of the best things about being natural is that I don't always have to decide between my hair and my heart because my hair maintenance is so low key. However, when I had a perm, I wore lots of ponytails and hats to cover bad hair days. It was a trade off I was willing to make for a healthy body.

Cute and easy to manage? What more could a sister on the run ask for? :)

As much as I want to look fabulous, I choose my heart/sanity over hair every time! As long as I can pull my hair back into a pony tail and get it off of my neck- especially in the Hotlanta summers- I'm happy as a clam! I need to run, it's what makes me tolerable!!!

I'm totally crazy! I cut bra strap length hair off when I got serious about running and got braids for the Disney Princess! I'm a nut. I think both should be fabulous! BTW....you swag is going in the mail :)

Your hair always looks fab in the pictures!

I choose my heart without question. I used to choose my head always but then again I used to not like to sweat LOL. Next I tried to have fly hair and a strong heart and it didn't work out too well for the hair. Now I have presentable hair (a bun) most days and very fly hair when I need to have it. I sweat 6 days a week so there has to be a compromise somewhere.

I did a post on my blog a while back about my hair care routine. I'm relaxed and intend to stay that way so I came from that perspective.

What do you all do to your hair while you're working out? Do you have a press or a perm?

ha! this post of your just initiated contact with my stylist. I have nappy-naps galore. Ack! (and yes, it's all about heart over hair)

Definitely heart over hair! But my poor hair does spend way too much time in a ponytail... sometimes, I just don't have time to wash it post-workout... but that would never stop me from a good sweat-inducing run!
